Simpsons Malt · Flavour and use
Crystal Dark is a bold, intensely crystalised malt where we get into the delicious realms of complex toffee, dark fruit and burnt sugar, but without the astringency of roasted malt. With those flavours combined with a rich, ruby-brown hue (250-285 °EBC), it makes Crystal Dark a perfect choice for Porters, Stouts and Barleywines, where a fuller caramel depth and darker malt character are desired. Typically used at 5-15% in the grist, Crystal Dark provides a deep malt backbone, balancing hop bitterness while enhancing colour, body and layered caramel complexity, making it an essential malt for brewers aiming for depth and richness in darker beer styles. Raisins, Toffee Sweetness, Burnt Caramel Whole, Milled
